MetaTV: Comcast interactive TV menu guide
Client: Comcast CableTV OnDemand Demo DVD: Comcast Interactive TV listings, high end content mock-ups, interactive content prototypes (under the umbrella of MetaTV ( currently TVworks )
Challenge: This project UI – UX Design:
Re-think the TV menu guide. Improve user experience, promote quickest access to On Demand content, keep user engaged and interested. Provide cable company with many revenue options. Main focus was to reinvent the textual TV menu guide to quickly, simply, direct users to the wealth of Comcast Cable’s content on offer; both Broadcast and On Demand content.
Approach Taken: Research various TV interactive functions given the limitations of set top boxes, Agile methods, research, development in stages through investigating UI UX approaches, testing.
Outcome:
1) Comcast TV guide/listings; designed user interaction menu, navigation via TV hand held remote
– promotes simple navigation within a mass of data content
– additional content displays without viewer leaving original point of contact
– keeps user engaged by showing all options per network, time and promotional listings at once
– provokes interest to view/pruchase content with colour graphic icons/posters
1a) Created, Designed and Built all high end prototypes, wireframes, UI, UX experience docs. Provided assets for DVD production.
2) Comcast TV guide/listings menu/Comcast On Demand interactive menu:
- Comcast On Demand menu launces direct point of sale direct from menu
– Provokes purchase/viewing of current VOD movie content with eye catching graphics
– simple navigation through top level COnD categories
3) Comcast TV guide/listings menu/HBO single advert menu for specific content
- exclusive advert package content for single network promotions
Bonus Outcome:
- These prototypes where client facing and used by the Sales Department to showcase the software’s capabilities
- Focussed/guided software engineers when coding the TV navigation.
- Built all content within the parameters of the various set top box devices which display the digital TV content via satellite.
- Part of a sales DVD presentation which helped to secure $65M corporate funding.
- These concepts UI, UX designs were included in the US Patent: US 8707354 B1
